Evaluation

30 day project

Evaluation

This 30 day / 20 day project has differed quite a lot especially from my previous project. One of the main reasons I think, is to do with the fact that the project was such a quick project, it gave me the push at the start to come up with a concept, or idea, and actually go through with every idea, instantly. Obviously with the 30 day concept of publishing a piece of art work everyday, pushed me to be constantly thinking of the project and what my objective or idea would be for that day. Also with the focus on 3D and plaster work, gave me the motivation to produced more work, and enjoy it more. Towards the end of the project I became more and more interested in my grandparents belongings and old photographs, and decided it would be a good idea to make this a common theme throughout the rest of the project.

Some problems I encountered through the project where at the beginning, obviously due to the main fact of not having a set theme, it took me longer to come up with the piece of artwork, and in turn made the piece of a lower standard. Another problem, was that towards the end of the piece I had not fulfilled the full amount of days, of blogging and producing the art work, but I think overall the choice to concentrate on 4 final pieces rather than to produced more work that would lack the final quality my pieces retain, was a good choice, but did jeopardise the whole concept of the project. Overall I have enjoyed being more involved in my art work, and constantly thinking of how I can improve in a positive way rather than not looking forward to picking up my sketch book, which has sometimes happened in previous projects. Overall my time management has improved dramatically, mainly due to the 30-day concept, and I am please with the final outcome.

Day 4

Hostage Takeover
Photograph of me, depicting kidnap or whatever you wish to decipher. This didn't take long to do, or long to edit. I don't like photographs that you can clearly tell have spend a long time in photoshop. So there you go, day 4. The weekend is upon us, who knows what that will bring????

Day 3

So, I have reached day 3, just about. My first thoughts where to have a bit of a photography themed day, the best photograph I would blog, so I set off, had a lovely English chippy dinner, where I took some interesting photographs, then went for a walk with a few friends around Penington flash, where I took more photographs. Back home I could not find the camera cable (typical) so the photographs can wait... last minute today, I decided to do a series of drawings of some of my closest friends. I drew these using a continuous line technique with a permanent marker, which gives the work an organic playful vibe, just like my friends :-D

Day 2

This is a charcoal drawing of my late nan, Doris Picton. Produced from an old photograph.

This is a charcoal drawing of my late grandfather Harry Picton.

This again was produced from an old photograph I found when routing through some old stuff. I think the influence for this drawing and the above drawing, was from the starting credits of the Pacific. Where the main aspect of the pictography is done in a charcoal style. I have to tell you it looks easier than it is to draw, and quite messy :-s

I will hopefully have and interesting day ahead of me tomorrow with a wander around a few charity shops, then off for a nice stroll through the countryside, so who knows what I will come up with tomorrow. I'm hoping some kind of collage or an arrangement of found objects..

who knows.?..?..?..?

Day 1

This is a watercolor of a trip I went on a few years ago. I produced this painting today from a photograph I had taken. I know its a little bit boring, but its a starting point, which I struggled to find. Hopefully I will do down the 3D route tomorrow, maybe with glass or metal.

A little bit about me

THE FIRST STEP

Well, I'm Jamie Picton, studying art and design (interdisciplinary) at Leeds Collage o Art. I'm currently in my second year of a BaHons degree, the common opinion is that if you do art, you basically do **** all, but ask anyone studying a creative subject.. there's shite loads of work involved. As being an interdisciplinary artist, for those of you who know what an interdisciplinary artist is, you know more than me..... kidding, its basically just an artist who can't make his/her mind up of what subject or discipline they specialise in, basically a good all rounder. so hopefully this will make my 30 day project a little bit more interesting. Anyway I have undertaken the 30days project. It was first introduced to me a couple of days ago by my hip trendy Dad (got to write that because he's going to read this ha ha) but yeh so I'm going to give it ago. Document every aspect of my thoughts and feelings of the roller coaster I will be jumping on. Probable most will be of dispare, and stress, thinking of a new piece of artwork everyday.
so here i go...................

Proposal

The Formal Proposal

The project title will be the Thirty day project. My father came across this when reading one of his regular music blogs, by the founder of cdbaby.com Derek Sivers. This was posted on his blog about the music industry and a youtube video which was called the first follower http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fW8amMCVAJQ&feature=player_embedded

This video involves one man dancing at a festival giving his all, alone on the side of the hill while the rest of the festival goers sit and watch, then comes the first follower, the leader embraces his presence and treats him as an equal, so now its not about the leader its about the first follower who calls for his friends to join in. Being the first follower is an under-appreciated form of leadership. Then comes along the second follower, its proof that the first has done well. Now comes two more, then three more, and before you know it the whole festival is booming. As more people join in its no longer risky. The new people that join will be part of the in-crowd so everyone does. Leadership is over-glorified; it was the first follower that transformed a lone nut into a leader.

So from this Andrew Dubber (Birmingham Uni lecturer) started an experiment, where he would think of an idea for thirty days, whether it be a website, a system, a concept, a piece of software, a new sandwich filling, whatever. And theses ideas are free for anyone to use. So the next follower Andrew Wicklander (blogger ), decided after the 30 days were over, he would take what he thought was the best idea and produce, make or design whatever the idea was. The idea he chose was the thirty day project. http://www.andrewdubber.com/2010/03/30-days-of-ideas-05/

So he took this idea, of having a thirty day calendar which is instead of have a new years resolution, which as we know mostly everyone gives up after a month or so. The idea is, you do something for thirty days, what ever it may be, and blog about your experiences and what you have achieved in those 30 days. So as he promised, Andrew Wicklander produced the website http://thirtydayproject.org/

So I have decided to take the challenge and be a follower to Derek Silvers, Andrew Dubber and Andrew Wicklander

My 30 day project will involve me producing a piece of art work every day for 30days. I will use the website to document what I have done to produce this piece of artwork that day, and what are the influences I have had to produce this piece of work weather it be a small video, a drawing painting, or small sculpture anything. At then end of the 30 days, I will exhibit the 30 object/art works and why I have produced this on this particular day. Due to the deadline, I will only be producing artwork for the 24 days.
